Dallas ISD Scholarship Program
The ACEC Dallas selected three seniors from the Dallas ISD graduating class of 2011 to each receive a $2,000 scholarship. This year, the selected recipients attend the Science and Engineering Magnet High School. The criteria the board used to select the scholarship recipients included SAT or ACT scores, GPA, and statement of financial need. Students were asked to submit two letters of recommendation, an unofficial transcript (AAR) and a 200 – 300 word essay on “What people and/or events in your life led you to choose to study engineering?”
ACEC Dallas Summer Intern Program
Each year, the ACEC Dallas provides a Summer Intern Program in an effort to bring the best and brightest students into the Dallas Area to work and learn, as well as encourage young engineers to come back to Dallas and make it their home after graduation. In 2009, more than 30 students participated. This summer, interns will enjoy a Texas Rangers Game with fellow interns and ACEC members from the Dallas and Tarrant County Chapters, two site tours of current engineering projects being performed by our chapter member firms, our July member luncheon program, and the opportunity to win one of three $500 essay contest scholarships.
W.T. White High School Solar Car Team
The ACEC Dallas has supported the W.T. White High School Solar Car Team with a donation of $500 for this year’s program. The Longhorn Solar Corps is an education program designed to teach high school students how to build and safely race roadworthy solar cars. This program was designed to motivate students in the sciences, engineering, and technology. The end product of each education cycle is a road worthy solar car which is entered into the Winston Solar Challenge: a closed-track event at the world famous Texas Motor Speedway, or a cross country event designed to give students an opportunity to display their work.
IEEE Future City Competition
The ACEC Dallas sponsors the “Most Innovative Use of Engineering” award for the North Texas Region Engineer’s Week Future City Competition. The mission of the competition is to provide a fun and exciting educational engineering program for seventh- and eighth-grade students. It combines a stimulating engineering challenge with a "hands-on" application to present their vision of a city of the future. By participating in this program, students foster engineering skills, such as teamwork, communication and problem solving skills while interacting with other students, teachers and engineer mentors. At the same time, the community is enlightened about the multi-disciplines within the engineering profession, and students are inspired to explore futuristic concepts and careers in engineering.
Engineer’s Week 2010 Awards Sponsorship
The ACEC Dallas was a gold sponsor again this year for the Engineer’s Week 2010 Awards hosted by the Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) Dallas and Preston Trails Chapters. Proceeds from the event support the chapters’ scholarship programs dedicated to promoting engineering as a rewarding career choice and attracting qualified persons to practice engineering. |
